Traditions

Stories from the past.

Another holiday season recently came to an end. If your family is anything like mine, there were plenty of “tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago,” as the song says. Lord, we have such colorful characters in our family circles and those stories that come up at the kitchen table or dining room table are always hysterical, aren’t they? The best part is that these people never even know how funny they are. They tell the stories and are almost surprised at … Continue reading

Just Do Nothing

Look up and enjoy the sky and trees.

There’s a popular shoe company that has a familiar slogan suggesting we should all “Just Do It,” but it occurs to me that there are times when the opposite is best–at some points in life, it’s better to “just do nothing.” This concept first crept into my consciousness years ago during my first visit to New York City.  It was quite an eye-opening experience for a farm-boy-turned-Marine. I recall with great pleasure the absolute peace sitting alongside a meandering creek, watching that bobber, waiting for it to disappear with a plop and anticipating the mighty tug of that cat … Continue reading

How was your year?

We could all use a little more understanding and good will.
canstockphoto15221584

Well friends, another year just blew by.  People in my circle agree with me that time seems to be going faster than ever now.  For me the passing of time is indicated by certain natural events that line up and accelerate the process.  The peeking out of spring seems to start the year as the cold fades.  Then there’s the welcome summer breezes that eventually turn into dreaded, humid dog days of July and before you know it, kids are … Continue reading
