I would be overjoyed if the media went back to printing true, well researched and documented news. The days of verification by "three independent sources" are long gone and rumor and innuendo prevail. How I miss Walter Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley, Ed Bradley and others who reported what they witnessed without inserting opinions, unless it was an editorial piece.

Most "newsmakers" now are unworthy of print. Good deeds are relegated to the back of a paper with an inch of coverage. An untalented person who "bares all/tells all" makes the headlines for "skin" or "sin".

I am weary of all of the articles and sound bytes blaming the President for every woe. Have we all become so cynical that we believe that he acted alone in creating a crisis? What about the House and the Senate who voted for bailouts, etc. ? Yet, when the criticisms come, he is held accountable.

We have fallen into a trap and are being held there by these "spin doctors". When they report that one person finished as a "strong second" and the former frontrunner "next to last" - before you spread the news, check the facts. How many were actually in the race? If there were only 2 candidates, finishing first is "next to last".

Turn off the televison. Read a book. Take a walk. Talk to people and honestly listen. Knowledge is power. Be awed by the wonderments that surround you. Share memories and moments. If something hurts you, tell the offender and give him or her an opportunity to explain and apologize. Hold yourself accountable for your actions. If you have to pause and think of a justification, maybe it isn't such a great idea.

Play hard, honest and fair.

Now, enjoy your day, your way.

Great article and that is why the community of Carol Stream is fortunate to have a man like Arnie running. He gets it. More governmental agencies should work like this and pool their resources to deliver services to "their" public.

Great story Ron!

When you look at life and all of the things that have an impact on you personally, it's ultimately your friends and family that you take with you to the next life in heaven; not the car, boat, house, job, or title.

In today's world it is difficult to not get caught up in the possessions game and really focus on what life is all about.

Great input Nancy, thanks for replying. I really like the idea of the wandering trash can! And I agree, conditioning the kids as early as possible is probably the one key item, and it should start at home, then be reinforced in schools and elsewhere. I also like the idea of buying the plastic bags at the grocery - that would get people thinking. At one grocery chain here in Georgia they have a plastic bag re-use program where you can bring your plastic bags back and they re-use them over and over again. There's a ton of ideas out there but people have to first be motivated to do something. I hope we can start turning our "throw-away" mind set around, soon.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed in the responses...or rather lack of them, to this Weekender. I thought there were lots of P&R pros out there who were recycle-savvy and willing to share ideas. I hope people were just distracted and will see this now and fire off some ideas....but thanks for yours Nancy, they were excellent! Oh, and your comments here are eco-friendly, digital medium, no paper, no plastic.:-)

Randy, the timing of this article is astounding. In my freebie weekly paper, a local church is hosting a Sierra Club documentary about plastic abuse. The film "Bag It" will show between 100 to 150 billion plastic bags in 2010 floating in the Ballona Creek in southwestern Los Angeles. I thought the picture was beachfront before I read the article and realized it was all plastic.

I personally take a very active role in buying products that I can recycle. My community recycling center does a great job of offering containers for plastics, paper, metal, appliances, tires, etc. I burn what I can in the fireplace and compost in my backyard. I am not responsible for a park per se, but I do take pride in taking action to pick up when I'm walking in my neighborhood, on a trail and even in a parking lot. And you're right -- once we fill up these spaces....what do we do? Unfortunately, we are a throw-away society and until our backs are to the walls...it's all gonna come down to money.

While visiting my dad in MA, he would pay a quarter to rent a carriage, if he returned it he would get the quarter back. If he didn't bring bags for his groceries he had to buy them at the register. In addition, he had to bag them himself at another counter. Why? The store kept it's overhead down and products were inexpensive. In a park situation it's the same: Take responsibility and have the containers available, or incentives to bring it out.

In Disney World Florida, children and adults kept feeding this wandering trash container to get it to talk, burp and thank them for feeding them. In some schools, children are taking repsonsibility for keeping their schools clean, recycling and gardening. The answer is to start this thought process early. If we continue as we are, we're leaving one heck of a mess to our children.

Are you kidding me - "Buyers should be aware that organic foods are no safer than nonorganic foods, according to government standards, and there is no scientific evidence..."
When was this article written? In the 90's? I have long ago decided that the government really does not have my best interests when it comes to grading or informing me about food.
Can't believe that this was written in a magazine that targets youth development workers such as myself. We advocate that since we are asking staff and campers to go120 hours a week in the heat and humidity of the outdoors in summer that we better supply them with the best fuel possible. Organic, fresh and made from raw materials food items are what we fuel with. We do have the evidence that it is better for you.

Synthetic surfaces are designed for people/places that cannot manage natural surfaces. Irrigating natural grass every day for 8 months, using aerosols for football field lines suggest it may be appropriate in this instance. Fall preemergence herbicide combined with overseeding (when? fall?). They could definitely use synthetic. Alternatively, if a native soil field will be over-scheduled---then a synthetic field is useful. Author should include "building costs" along with maintenance for a truer cost comparison.

My first trek was in 1970, followed by serving on staff in 1971. I returned as an adult leader in 2007. It was like a dream going back then. I now am returning one more time this year in 2012 and anxious to see the new facility. Since my first trek in 1970, my heart has always remained in the north woods. Congratulations on your new facility.

I learned something a few years ago when I returned to my alma mater for an award ceremony. I had to give a speech, and I realized while preparing it that all those folks at the Oscars who stand up and say thankyouthankyouthankyou really mean it. They've looked back and seen the tiny moments where small, soft words from someone had huge impacts on their lives. I had to give a speech, and I realized while preparing it that all those folks at the Oscars who stand up and say thankyouthankyouthankyou really mean it. They’ve looked back and seen the tiny moments where small, soft words from someone had huge impacts on their lives. The speech ended up being about those moments, and it led me to get back in touch with some of those folks. So kudos to you, Ron, and all those who encourage others.

Thanks for the wonderful article and the great tips! Every once in awhile when I need a positive "pick me up" I have an "It's A Wonderful Life" experience and look back on the positive imprints that I left behind. You truly never know how impactful a positive action or word can truly be.

Not against synthetic, but why were not all of the costs after installing the surface listed? Does this not equate to maintenance cost for the turf?
One major item that would have been installed along with the surface would have been irrigation to control the temperature of the surface, unless they only use the surface spring and fall.

Also it seems that they did not try any alternate measures to reduce their cost with turf. Example: weather station controlled irrigation (less water and applied when needed), fertilizing/pesticide should have been reduced over the years (if properly done) you would have only be spot spraying for weeds; painting -- no brainer here, go to concentrate (with growth regulator) and sprayer and the number of times to paint is reduced.

Duly noted, Jennifer. I'm doubly ashamed as I was the spelling bee champion of my junior high in the 8th grade. I was evidently so thrilled by the combination of mythology and summer camp in a story that I overlooked the obvious. Just don't tell my students I'm not perfect...:)

Don't let my misspellings take away from the fun of the book--it is a fabulous read no matter your age.

Once a Marine, Always A Marine ... is a fantastic story and I can't wait until the 2nd part of the story. In one of our parks, we are creating an outdoor area that details American history, with an emphasis on the Constitution and the military branches. It's always great to read a personal account of military service. Thank you, Mr. Gaddo, for your service.

Well said Ron. Bad times do often bring out the best in people and can clarify what the really important things in life are. We generally don't need even a fraction of the "things" that we deem important; over-stuffed attics and garages, and yard sales, will testify to that. In the end it's the simple things that really count - health, family support, food, shelter, water and air...you know, the basics. You remind us that there are way more good people out there - the silent majority - than the bad that you hear about on the daily news.

Good article, but I have a few clarifications to make;
1) There are numerous states with laws regarding playground safety, California being the most recognized to comply with all "playground related" ASTM Standards and CPSC Guidelines. There are 18 other states
with varying laws.

2) IPEMA does not certify products according to the CPSC Guidelines, and covers almost all of the F1487 Standard.

3) Adjacent components where one or both is higher than 30 inches (not 24 inches) trigger overlapping use zone rules.

Since Beth is described as a middle school reading teacher, I am particularly abhorred by her rampant misuse/misspelling of the word lightening instead of lightning. The correct spelling of the word is right there on the cover of the book! Percy Jackson is alleged to have stolen Zeus' lightning bolt, not his supply of hair lightening Sun-in.

Moving down from my grammatical soap box, I will say that the entire Percy Jackson series is fabulous, as are Riordan's Kane Chronicles. I also really loved Holes. If you want to be a bit terrified as a camp director, I highly recommend "The Butterfly Revolution", an older book that describes a Lord of the Flies like take-over of a summer camp.

Thanks, Barb, and the others who have responded here and via my email. Indeed, we have another dog, Bandit, a 15-year old Peek A Poo...another great little dog. Unfortunately, he is getting old and frail and I fear that I'll need to be making that dreaded trip to the vet again in 2012. We actually thought he would have been the first to go and never gave a thought to Leah getting sick. It all happened very quickly. We've discussed it about Bandit, but he still gets a gitty up in his gait and a glint in his eyes when I grab a bath towel and play his favorite chase game...though he doesn't chase nearly as aggressively as he used to and tires after about a minute. So I'll focus on him and after he's gone, I guess I'll let nature take its course and see if another dog...maybe Leah reincarnated...finds me.

So sorry for your loss of your beloved dog, Leah. We purchased our Norwegian Elkhound on New Year's Eve in 2010. Our previous dog had also been a Norwegian Elkhound that we adopted from a family that our daughter babysat for. Sir Timber lived to be 14 3/4. He was a wonderful dog, companion and family member. Now we have Son of a Gunnar - Gunnar Sven. Gunnar brings us unconditional love every day. I love dogs and was not allowed to have a dog as a child because we had 5 kids and my Mother didn't like animals. Thus, four out of the five of us have dogs to this day! Thanks for sharing a beautiful story. Go adopt another dog. It will make a difference in your life and their life...... But you already know this nugget from Leah.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the great comments! My perspective on how a camp is designed is based on two things: 1. Gary Forster who made me look at everything differently at camp (http://garyforster.com) and Ideo (http://ideo.com), the design company, who does extensive research in the habits of customers. I think one the best things we can do is observe the habits of our customers to see where our gaps might be in how we design facilities and programs. Thanks again for the feedback!

Nice article! Couldn't agree more. Out of curiosity, where do you get your data on retention rates for various aged campers? I'm currently constructing a tool to help camps figure out how to monetize their retention rates and haven't come across any tangible studies on those numbers. Thanks!

Great timing for me on this article! I have a meeting on the 19th to discuss the development of some property we have. Guess who is not on the committee? No youth or teens...might have to work on that part!

Good article.
I agree, "One size does not fit all."
In planning our programmes, how often do we take into account age and gender characteristics. We need to taylor our programmes, our activities, even many of our facilities to be age and gender appropriate.
Thanks for the reminder.

Architects can be part of the problem (I can say that because I spent 5 years in school to become one.) Dave's most important concept: We need to talk less and listen more. I was just at a camp planning session with an architect who actually said, I kid you not, "We are not going to let our customers define our aesthetics."

Great article. Dogs may be the best creature God created. I have had 4 dogs since I was 12 and I am 58. I have not been without a dog except for short times between dogs. Tippy, Amber, Dusty and now Crackers have enriched my life and my family's life tremendously. Each one had their own special things they would do, their own special talents (they were also dumb as a post). But the one thing with them all: They were sweet personality-wise and unconditionally loved us.

Great article. I'd love to hear some other examples aside from just adjustable basketball hoops and cabins with bathrooms.

Thank you for sharing that story. It was moving and i can feel for you. I think every person should have a pet at one time or another in thier life so they get to understand that unconditional love.

Love these tips! Retention is really important for us because we teach classes and re-training costs a lot of money. Our teachers are not on contracts though, they are professional teachers that are paid hourly wages; how do contracts work for other camps?
