Coach Kids Instead Of Officials

As spring nears, we are closer to youth baseball, softball, and soccer seasons. Each year, we—as parks and recreation professionals—have one common problem: the coach/official relationship. Each year, this relationship seems to worsen.

A baseball field or basketball court is no place for a parent or coach to live out their own shortcomings in sports. It is a place for kids to have fun. Yes, at the end of the day there are winners and losers, but they are not the coaches or the parents; it is the kids. I worked with a veteran softball official when I was just getting my feet wet and I will never forget something he told a hostile coach one night, “Coach, if you spent more time coaching your kids and less time coaching the umpires, then you might not be losing.”

Coaches, as the new season approaches, spend every second you can coaching. Every second you spend arguing calls is a second a kid needs teaching and mentoring. When we get back to a time when a coach coached, parents cheered, and officials officiated, our children will be better off for it.
