Snow Much Fun In Chicago

Once the snow begins to fall, it’s time for Chicagoans to strap on the snowshoes and cross-country skis.

Chicago's Northerly Island is a great place to try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

The city’s park district will open Northerly Island, 1400 S. Lynn White Dr., for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during select Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 26, 2012.

The trails will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those days, as long as there is at least three inches of snow on the ground.

Families can circle the 91-acre peninsula on their snowshoes or cross-country skis. Look for winter birds, winter native animals, or enjoy the incredible view of Chicago’s skyline.

Participants can also enjoy a good, old-fashioned snowball fight, build a snowman or two, and take a break from the cold weather by warming up inside the field house.

The dates, subject to change, are:
· Dec. 17, 18
· Jan. 7, 8, 14, 15, 22, 28, 29
· Feb. 4, 5, 11, 12, 19, 25, 26

Equipment is available to check out for $5 for two hours of skiing and trekking at the Northerly Island field house. Snowshoes and cross-country skis are checked out on a first-come, first-served basis. Please remember to bring a valid ID.

If you have your own cross-country skis or snowshoes, it is free to ski and trek around the island.
