Rivers, Trails, & Conservation Assistance

Do you have an outdoor recreation or natural resource conservation project for your community in mind?  Are you trying to protect your local rivers, save an unspoiled landscape, or build trails where everyone in your community can enjoy nature?

Just Ask-We can Help….Put your Ideas into Action

Every year the National Park Service helps hundreds of locally-driven projects create opportunities for healthy outdoor recreation, connect youth with the outdoors, and connect communities to parks.  Though the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program provides no funding, we do provide the time and expertise of our experienced staff to help communities plan for success.

RTCA can help you by guiding you through your community project step by step.  We count on the drive, commitment, and enthusiasm of community members to carry out the project.  RTCA assists communities everywhere in Alaska in taking the necessary steps to reach their vision.

Learn to:

  • Think and plan strategically,
  • Communicate your ideas and build relationships,
  • Find funding sources,
  • Navigate state and federal regulations,
  • Design and construct trails, and
  • Create waterways and conservation networks.

To apply, visit www.nps.gov/rtca for complete information and the application.  Please email Alaska applications directly to lisa_holzapfel@nps.gov rather than to Washington DC.  Applications for assistance will be accepted until August 1. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their project ideas with Lisa Holzapfel, Program Manager at 907-644-3586, or Heather Rice, Outdoor Recreation Planner at 907-644-3587 before applying.

To learn more about RTCA and past year projects, please visit the NPS Alaska Region RTCA website, http://go.nps.gov/alaska/rtca.
