Main Terrain Park Wins Landscape Architecture Award

Main Terrain Park, a jewel in Chattanooga’s park system, has just won the Award of Merit in the category of Natural Resource Conservation-Sustainable Design, presented by the Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The sustainable art and fitness park, opened in January of 2013, provides the city with an attractive, healthy solution to runoff water and the revitalization of a brownfield. The space features a running track that spans the 1.72-acre tract of land, with five fitness stations, provided by PlayCore through its GameTime brand. The stations, part of the Elite line of fitness products is designed for athletes who wish to develop higher standards for fitness and include pull up stations, climbing walls, traversable rings for muscle development, and mushroom shaped pieces that can be used for push ups, plyo work, and even resting along the path.

Art installations feature haiku at intervals along the running path and an incredible public art installation designed by artist Thomas Sayre, constructed at his Raleigh, N.C., studio at Clearscapes and assembled in Chattanooga by his and studio director Christian Karkow’s team. Three concrete pylons anchor the nine-piece sculpture, each topped with a moveable steel truss that can spin around to create a physical bridge structure at the heart of the park. The four surrounding illuminated pylons and the two fixed pylons at each end of the park make for the visual illusion of one continuous bridge. The movable bridge is also used by fitness enthusiasts to promote flexibility, strength, and coordination.

The manicured lawns throughout the park not only serve as inviting community spaces, but also conceal the park’s storm water management functions. With Main Terrain open, 1.5 million gallons of water will be diverted annually from the city’s sewer systems, and stored in onsite detention ponds. An additional 40,000 gallons will be recycled into an irrigation system.

The park has also won PlayCore’s prestigious National Demonstration Site designation, an award given to Outdoor Fitness Parks that meet the basis of a well rounded workout, and are actively marketed and promoted in a community. PlayCore’s Corporate VP of Marketing, Anne-Marie Spencer adds, “With the release of our latest best practice program, Outdoor Fitness Parks, Best Practices for promoting community Health by Increasing Activity, we want to recognize Outdoor Fitness Parks that follow best practices in design/marketing and showcase them in a National Registry so other communities can learn from their success.”
