Thorner began his career as a journalist and lawyer, was a reporter for Legal Times, the Associated Press, The Washington Post and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and was a legal counsel for the National Labor Relations Board.

Thorner received his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. He also has a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University. His undergraduate degree in history and political science was from Duke University, where he served as the managing editor of The Duke Chronicle.

Thorner was on the boards of directors of the American Institute of Physics and the American Association of Engineering Societies. He is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives. He is a certified association executive and is licensed to practice law in two states and the District of Columbia.
