Tomorrow is my wife’s 40th birthday, which means we have both entered our fourth decade.
As a way to celebrate this dubious achievement, I’ve created the 40-for-40 club. It has two members and one goal –- to have 40 new experiences in one year.
These experiences don’t have to be earth-shattering things like travel to China, meet the president, or run a marathon. Instead, I’m looking at more simple and meaningful things like drive in a convertible, go dancing, eat at a new restaurant, take a walk at midnight or throw the elegant backyard party we’ve always talked about.
To mark our year-long adventure (and track our progress), I went to our local Staples and ordered one of those oversized posters — the one’s where they blow up a picture and leave a 4-inch white band around the edge to write on.
I plan to hang the poster on our kitchen wall and mark each experience on the poster until we’ve hit our magic number –- and, who knows? Maybe, we’ll just keep going — get a new poster for each year and do the same thing.
I know this is not a new idea (my ideas rarely are), but it has fired my imagination and, I hope, hers.
I thought this little experiment was worth nothing here at PRB, but then I realized this is our annual maintenance issue — which means we’ve collected stories and ideas of how agencies across the globe are improving and maintaining their facilities, programs and employees, just like I’m working to improve and maintain my relationship with my wife and family.
Granted, we may not have used 40 ideas in this issue, but some are common sense, some are crazy (can you say Puckleball), and all of them are interesting and applicable.
As usual, I think it’s a winner. I hope you agree.
