2011 Project Portfolio
Number of Floors: 2
Situated in a park near the city center, this recreation center includes indoor leisure aquatics, athletic, fitness and health facilities as well as an office complex for staff members. An existing eight-lane outdoor lap pool was also renovated. The building is organized by a two-story day-lit central spine, which links the facility’s active and passive functions. The high-performance building employs skylights, automatic lighting controls, and extra insulation; regenerative media filter in the pool saves water and energy in addition to using significantly fewer chemicals than traditional sand filters.

The two-story, steel-and-masonry structure includes a full-size gymnasium, enclosed walking track, locker rooms, offices, restroom facilities and a double-height lobby with mezzanine access to the walking track. The project made extensive use of day lighting to reduce lighting costs and promote occupant health and well being. Overall, the building was designed to use 25-percent less energy than traditional construction. The white roof reflects sunlight to reduce overall heating and cooling loads while a 600-square-foot green roof over the locker rooms reduces building runoff.
