Environmental Law Institute

Florence LaRiviere is the recipient of one of the most prestigious environmental prizes in the nation. She was awarded the 2012 National Wetlands Award, and named the Wetland Community Leader of the Year by the Environmental Law Institute headquartered in Washington, D.C.

In 1972, LaRiviere helped organize a band of concerned citizens and establish America’s first urban national wildlife refuge. The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Palo Alto, Calif. protects and preserves more than 30,000 acres of wetlands.

Smith Turf International Pairs Up With Underhill

Smith Turf and Irrigation (STI), a golf, landscape and irrigation distributor on the East Coast, was recently named an Underhill master stocking distributor for golf products. STI is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., and has 20 branches in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Underhill manufactures a broad line of irrigation products for golf, residential and commercial installations.

Plan Attempts To Reduce Pollution In Maryland 

Baltimore, Md.–As part of the TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) Program, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is planting over 81,420 trees at more than 280 sites designed by Mahan Rykiel Associates.

The Baltimore-based landscape architecture, urban design and planning firm, working with SHA’s Office of Environmental Design, assessed sites statewide and created reforestation concept plans within SHA right of way.

TMDL is a “pollution diet” for the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which includes six states plus the District of Columbia. The initiative is designed to reduce the amount of sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus and other micro-scale pollutants entering the waterways that flow to the Bay.

Learn About New Pyrethroid Label Language

Philadelphia–Two new videos from FMC Corporation take lawn care professionals step-by-step through the new label language adopted by the EPA for non-crop outdoor use of all pyrethroid insecticide products. The videos each focus on a different type of product:  liquid pyrethroids or granular pyrethroids.

By adopting the new label language, the EPA hopes to lessen the potential for insecticide drift and run-off, and call attention to environmental stewardship of pyrethroid products.

STMA Partners With Plant Management Network International

The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) has become a partner of Plant Management Network International (PMN), a nonprofit online publisher of science-based resources.

This partnership allows STMA to offer PMN’s resources as a benefit at no additional charge to the association’s more than 2,800 members.
