Built To Last

Project Portfolio

The refurbished outdoor amphitheatre at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

The Specs:

Location: University of Wisconsin-River Falls

Contractor: Pember Excavating, Menomonie, Wis.

Designer: Cedar Corporation, Menomonie, Wis.

Manufacturer: Willow Creek Concrete Products, Kimball, Minn.

Solution: Versa-Lok Weathered Mosaic, Chestnut Blend color

Amenities: Inspired by an amphitheatre built in the Greco-Roman style in Italy, the original structure on this college campus was built in the 1960s. It has become a favorite gathering spot for commencement ceremonies and a weekly summer music series.

Old limestone was replaced with Versa-Loc Weathered Mosaic.

Over time, however, the limestone had deteriorated and needed to be repaired. In the spring 2009, the Melvin Wall Amphitheatre rehabilitation project began and landscaping was finished the following year.

The long, arcing seat walls are over 1,400 feet long and about 1.5 feet tall. Stairs are integrated into the seating tiers at several points.

Over 3,000 square feet of Versa-Lok were used on the project. The old limestone was put back into service after it was removed from the amphitheatre’s seating.

It remains one of the few outdoor amphitheatres in the country located on a college campus.
