Advanced Green Architecture (AGA), Grand Rapids, Mich., has been awarded the contract for the green roof system for the University of Iowa’s Art Building Replacement Facility.

The new five-story, approximately 126,000-square-foot structure is a LEED Gold certification building topped with the 14,600 square-foot-green roof system that will boast the custom, pre-vegetated sedum mix grown by AGA in their Advanced Green Roof™ system at their nursery. Midwest Green Roof of Arlington Heights, Ill., will perform the green roof installation next spring.

The plant mix for this project will include:

  • Sedum album
  • Sedum middendorffianum var. diffusum
  • Sedum spurium ‘Album Superbum’
  • Sedum spurium ‘Roseum’
  • Sedum takesimense ‘Gold Carpet’
  • Allium tanguticum ‘Summer Beauty’
  • Sedum kamtschaticum ‘Takahira Dake’
  • Sedum spectablile ‘Neon’

The facility, expected to be completed in mid-2016, designed by Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with BNIM Architects, will replace the 1936 Art Building Facility, which was heavily damaged during a flood of the Iowa City, Iowa campus in June 2008. It will provide studio space for ceramics, sculpture, metals, photography, printmaking, painting and drawing, and 3D multimedia. It will also include space for graduate and undergraduate student studios, faculty and staff offices, and gallery exhibit space.

This project adds to the expanding green roof projects AGA has created. Projects include Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Rockford Construction’s renovations to create a LEED certified building for its new office; the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA)—a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation; and the Catalyst Partners Office, LEED-NC v2.2 Platinum Certified project that was the most green building at the time of certification. ; a green roof on Howie’s Hockey and a Caledonia residence. Other projects include several residences, including a second Certified Wildlife Habitat; the roof of the West Michigan Symphony performance building; and Vision House L.A.
