Risky Business

Late last week, my wife called to let me know our insurance agent had given her the inside scoop on exactly how to insure our first teen driver and that it wasn’t going to cost nearly as much as she had feared.

Her enthusiasm was palpable and I hung up smiling at the thought of somebody being that excited over insurance.

Of course, it wasn’t the insurance or even the good price and insider knowledge that had set her into a tizzy. It was the fact that in order to even make the call to our insurance agent, our oldest child had to finish his training and be capable enough that the state would give him a license and my wife would actually let him use it.

In reality, this phone call to the insurance agent was the culmination of seven months of risk-management work, a job she took on for the family.

I got to thinking about this as I read Rick Braschler’s article “Rest Insured” starting on page 20. In it, he shares the insights he’s gained from working as the director of risk management for Kanakuk Kamps.

The first thing he recommends is to choose your insurance agent wisely—namely somebody with experience insuring camp properties and programs even if that person isn’t a “friend of the camp.”

More through luck than research, my wife and I chose a great insurance agent and that relationship has paid off time and again over the years. It’s something I honestly didn’t envision when shopping for a home and auto policy, but something I’m grateful for now.

Something else I’m grateful for?

The opportunity to bring Camp Business to you year after year.

As hard as it is to believe, we’re starting our 13th year of publishing the magazine. During all that time, we’ve made a lot of good friends, watched the industry continue to change and evolve with the times and, most important, continue to provide kids of all ages with a learning and growing experience that is second-to-none.

To celebrate that mission, this is also our “green” issue in which we try to highlight ways you and your campers can be more friendly to Mother Earth and keep her green and vibrant for the next generation.

As usual, the issue was a blast to put together. I hope you enjoy it.
