Family Meals

The first thing we purchased when we moved into our house was a large, rectangular, expandable kitchen table. We didn’t have the money for it, and had a lot of other items competing for our attention–a couch, a yard–but we knew a kitchen table was our only true need.

During the week, it easily fits all seven of the Auths, and during special events–birthday parties, graduations, dinner parties–it expands to seat 12 or 14, if we get creative with folding chairs.

To say it’s the center of our universe isn’t really an exaggeration. It’s in the room of the house we use the most and almost always has somebody doing something on it–homework, arts and crafts, reading, crying, complaining, explaining, or sharing.

This last one is my all-time favorite.

Some of my fondest memories are those late-night chats under the glow of the kitchen lights. You know the ones; when one of your kids comes home from a late practice, grabs a sandwich, sits down, and fills you and your wife in on everything that happened that day.

Relationships are deepened and repaired around a kitchen table. It’s no different at camp.

As contributor George Hughes shares, “Campers and alumni…revere the wonderful experiences they had in their camp dining hall: the songs they sang, the friends they met…the wonderful meals they ate.” (“Dining Hall Design And Kitchen Layout,” pg. 24).

Hughes goes on to provide food for thought as to how dining hall design and layout can facilitate relationship-building and underscore everything else taught at camp. It’s a great article, and one I’m sure you’ll enjoy. But, it’s not the only good one.

Our feature, “A Unique Setting,” beginning on page 15, takes you inside the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and illustrates how the National Park Service is running camp programs. Chris Thurber chimes in with a column that is so good, that I don’t want to spoil the surprise. It starts on page 40.

As usual, we had a lot of fun putting this issue together and hope you enjoy the result.
