Beat Those Back-To-School Blues

Your kids are home from camp, summer is drawing to a close and back-to-school sales are popping up all over town.

Not every kid is looking forward to going back to school!

It’s an exciting time of year–but a big transition for many kids.

If you have a child who is less than thrilled about starting or returning to school, follow these tips from the folks at whatsupforkids.com. The article focuses on foster kids, but the information is helpful for parents of any child who might be anxious about the coming school year.

Ease Your Way In: Spend 15 minutes a day reading to or with your child. Conduct a science experiment. Go on a nature walk. Practice fractions and measuring while baking cookies. The idea is to remind your child that learning can be fun!

Celebrate: Welcome the new school year by going out to a celebratory dinner or a special family outing. Serve a cake and have a back-to-school party. Create a tradition that your kids can look forward to at the end of every summer.

Make A Test Run: Contact your child’s school about a week before school starts. Ask if you can come in and walk the hallways, see your child’s classroom and the cafeteria, maybe say hi to his new teacher. Familiarity can ease first-day jitters.

Don’t Let The Fun End: Just because the summer’s over doesn’t mean you can’t have fun during the school week. Plan simple, inexpensive treats for weekdays after school or in the evening–a trip to the ice cream shop for an after-homework treat, a family hike in the woods, a stop at the park to play for awhile after the last school bell rings.
