Nothin’ But Nets
Soccer is focus of Carey Grove Park Phase I
By Jennifer Imburgia
Cary Grove Park site is centrally located in the village and adjacent to the local elementary school, junior high school, high school and public library--making this park a strong component in the village’s education and recreation network. Hitchcock Design Group’s Recreation Design Team was asked to design the master plan for this key active park to serve the residents of Cary. The team worked with a community task force, the Cary Park District Board of Commissioners and staff to build consensus on the needs for this site. The park includes a 100,000-square-foot recreation center, football, soccer and baseball fields and numerous complimentary support facilities, making it easy to use and family-oriented. Native plantings are specified throughout the site to reduce maintenance costs and promote water quality of stormwater runoff. The Cary Grove Park satisfies the community’s expanding sports programs and serves as the central nerve center for the Cary Park District.
After designing the master plan, Hitchcock Design Group’s Recreation Design Team was asked to continue the project by creating the construction documents for the park’s first phase. This phase features two full-sized and one half-sized soccer fields. The axial alignment of Phase I sets a precedent for the future phases of the park. The central gathering area offers diverse opportunities for family users and spectators, including restroom facilities, a picnic shelter, a play area and several paths. The major constraint of this project was the county’s requirement to contain all storm water on the site. This requirement led to the implementation of bio-swales, native plantings and other Best Management Practices to maximize the storm water capacity, management and infiltration.
The park’s popular sports fields offer a unique car drop-off lane for parents to safely deliver their kids to athletic events. Appealing savanna islands encircle the park’s sports fields and natural system detention areas contain prairie plants. The centralized play area was elevated to provide visual viewing access to all three sports fields.
